HERITAGE HOME RESTORATION: THE FERNHILL PROJECT

Fernhill was an intricate project where research and integrity were essential to reinvigorate and enhance the original beauty whilst maintaining the high quality of craftsmanship and heritage of the homestead

Fernhill, built in 1847, is a registered Heritage Home. The restoration included carefully chosen replacements, such as structural timber beams made with traditional mortice and tenon joinery. The original construction used only hand-forged blacksmith nails. It was crucial to source sustainable materials that maintained the quality of the original building. The Ensō Building firm thanks the Matthews family for trusting them with the restoration of Wellington’s heritage home, Fernhill.

INNOVATIVE NEW BUILDS IN WELLINGTON: FOREST HOME

Set in the tranquility of Ngaio Gorge this Forest home was designed by its owner, Joseph Nicholls. A challenging topography, this build was an exciting and well engineered solution to Wellington’s steep sites and unique landscapes. The special task of minimising the impact of construction on a site within a forest was a welcome challenge and it was a pleasure to tread as lightly as possible on this site alongside it’s owner.

A helicopter was used to deliver the majority of materials to the site as to avoid deteriorating the beauty of its trail access. It sits on six metre timber poles that sit on four metre rock anchors.

Many new build sites in Wellington present steep topography and design challenges. There are so many solutions to every problem and we are here to help you work through the logistics of getting the home you imagine without compromising the quality you deserve.
